History Since the conversion of the Nomadic Berber tribes to Islam in the 8th & 9th centuries and with it's strong geographical importance, Morocco has had a very chequered history, culminating in it's independence from France in 1956. Throughout the century’s Berber culture, art and craftsmanship has flourished. With the Atlas and Rif mountain ranges and fertile river valleys agriculture, especially the breeding of sheep and goats for wool developed. The weaving of Rugs, Kilims and textiles, being a natural extension of this, playing a major role in domestic life and commerce. All are woven on traditional wooden hand looms with 100% pure wool, no two pieces the same. Some of the finest Berber Rugs and Kilims are now in museums, galleries and private collections throughout the world.
